The Halo and Doom series–now both under the Xbox umbrella–has been compared over the years because of the similar armor on the Master Chief and Doomguy. In Halo Infinite, that similarity looks like it could extend to the gameplay, at least for the “mini-bosses” designed specifically to take out UNSC’s famous super-soldiers.
In a massive Halo Waypoint blog post that also included details on Craig’s new look and the game’s new freestyle sandbox, 343 Industries also detailed its approach to enemy encounters. The new Spartan Killers enemy type is, as the name suggests, tasked with murdering the Master Chief and any other Spartans they come across. If you’ve played Doom Eternal, then you’re undoubtedly familiar with the game’s infuriating Marauder demon. We’ll have to wait and see if the Spartan Killers are as formidable, but their role appears to be the same: kill you… a lot.
They’re Elite-species aliens and members of the Banished faction, and as you can see in the image above, their armor and glowing red energy sword are certainly imposing. Does that mean they’ll be immune to a few rockets to the face or a well-placed shotgun blast? Of course not.
The Spartan Killers aren’t generic enemies, either–each has a unique story and “battle trophies” to go with it, which makes it sound like there will be pre-set moments when they come out to fight.
Halo Infinite is out on December 8 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC. It’s free on Game Pass, and the multiplayer is free for everyone.
