Following a promising debut of the early access release between Twitch and Steam, Hogwarts Legacy continued to perform well now that the game is available to everyone who purchased it.
Over the weekend, the open world RPG developed by Avalanche Software came very close to the all-time concurrent players’ peak of Amazon’s New World and FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, with SteamDB registering 879K players in the game at once. This currently ranks Hogwarts Legacy #8 in the all-time Steam chart led by PUBG (#1), Lost Ark (#2), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (#3), Dota 2 (#4), and Cyberpunk 2077 (#5), with CD Projekt RED’s game remaining the king of single player games.
However, it should be noted that unlike Elden Ring and New World, Hogwarts Legacy is also available on the Epic Games Store. As such, it is easy to imagine the overall count of PC players would have allowed the game to surpass at least New World, if not Elden Ring too.
While we don’t have overall sales figures yet, GamesIndustry.biz just shared a report for the game’s physical launch sales in the United Kingdom. It seems like Hogwarts Legacy is by far the biggest Harry Potter game launch ever, beating 2001’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by 64%. Even compared to last year’s Elden Ring release, launch sales for this game were higher by around 80%. As expected, nearly all of the sales happened on PlayStation 5, with only 18% on Microsoft’s Xbox Series S|X consoles.
If you’re still on the fence about the game, you can check out the review-in-progress made by Chris Wray, which will be updated shortly to include the full score and final thoughts. We’ve also got several guides, including beginner tips, how to fast travel, and where to get all the Gobstones. Again, more will be published later today. Stay tuned!
