A team of industry veterans have launched a training centre in Portugal called Codfish Academy focused on Unreal Engine game development.
Founded by Oliver Kern, Kadri Harma, and Ricardo Flores, with over 50 years of combined experience, the team of eight includes three certified Unreal instructors.
Capitalising on the shift from Unity to Unreal Engine, the academy provides onsite courses lasting three to nine months in Óbidos, Portugal, starting in October 2025, alongside online AI courses in May 2025. Some of the announced courses range from beginner level to intermedia and advanced.
Bridging a gap
Nested within the Technology Park in Óbidos, the initiative also offers afternoon and early evening classes, allowing participants to develop their skills while continuing freelance projects or part-time work.
Furthermore, Codfish said it will support alumni with recruitment and are already working on transitioning full studios and games, while promoting Óbidos as a vibrant spot for freelancing and studying.
“Codfish Academy exists to provide game creators the skills, network and confidence to progress in an ever-evolving industry,” said Codfish Academy CEO Ricardo Flores in a statement to PocketGamer.biz
“We are looking to bridge the gap between formal education and industry needs.”
Óbidos Parque executive director Miguel Silvestre commented: “It is with great enthusiasm that we welcome Codfish Academy to the Park. This project represents an important step towards positioning Óbidos as a national hub for game development and digital arts.”
