The iPhone 13 line-up isn’t released for another three days, but attention is already turning to what next year’s iPhone 14 models will offer. And if you love iPhones, but hate the notch, it might be worth saving up for an iPhone 14 Pro.
As 9To5Mac reports, well-known and reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported his latest finding with regards to future models of the iPhone. Kuo believes that both the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max models will ditch the notch at the top of the display and instead use a hole-punch camera. That would mean the sensors required for Face ID move to be located under the display.
The other change is on the rear of the smartphones, with Kuo suggesting Apple will replace the current (and revamped) 12-megapixel Wide lens on the iPhone 13 Pro models with a 48-megapixel alternative. As for rumors of Touch ID making a comeback in an under-screen form, Kuo says it won’t be ready until the second half of 2023 because the technology simply isn’t good enough yet for Apple to consider using it.
Hole-punch cameras are not new technology. Many smartphone manufacturers use them already on Android devices, with Samsung offering a great example of what’s possible. What’s surprising is that Apple hasn’t opted for an under-display camera (such as Xiaomi’s solution) seeing as it will have to hide the Face ID sensors below the screen anyway for this to work. Perhaps, just like with Touch ID, the performance of a hidden selfie camera simply isn’t good enough yet for Apple to consider it.
