This spring, a new 24in iMac was launched, replacing the old 21.5in model and bringing significantly more screen space to the entry-level iMac.
Bloomberg’s Apple expert Mark Gurman (in his Power On newsletter) now reports that Apple is developing another new iMac that is intended to replace the old 27in model. This too will up the ante in terms of screen size: exactly how big a screen we’re talking about (he calls it “jumbo”) remains to be seen, but we can probably expect it to be at least 30in. It could be as large as 32in, if some of the more optimistic pundits are to be believed.
“I absolutely still believe that a larger, redesigned iMac to replace the Intel 27in models is en route,” Gurman writes. “Apple increasing the screen size of the smaller model from 21.5in to 24in seems to indicate that the 27in model could see a size increase as well.”
According to Gurman, the big-screen iMac will also feature a more powerful variant of Apple’s proprietary processor, but whether this will be the M1X or the M2X depends on when the machine is released.
Macs released in the remaining months of 2021 are likely to be based on the M1X, which will be faster than the M1 but architecturally pretty much the same; the more radically upgraded M2 family of chips isn’t expected to launch until 2022. Gurman’s reference to the ‘M2X’, a souped-version of the basic M2 which itself isn’t even close to launch, is the first mention we’ve heard of it.
