The majority of 2023’s Hogwarts Legacy physical sales in the UK came from the PlayStation 5 version, followed by the PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions.
As covered last month, the Harry Potter-inspired title was 2023’s best-selling new release, and it also topped Google search trends last year. As now reported by GamesIndustry.biz, this also applies to UK boxed sales where the game beat EA’s Sports FC 24 (although EA’s game launched seven months later than Hogwarts). More interestingly, however, might be the split between the different (physical) platforms on which the title was released. The game from developer Avalanche Software was released across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC back in February of this year, with the PS4 and Xbox One versions releasing several months later on May 5. The Switch version was released on November 14.
According to data from GfK, well over half of physical sales of the game came from the PS5 version, followed by the PS4 version. Interestingly enough, the Switch version (although launched 9 months later than the PS5 and Xbox Series versions), took the third spot in the UK boxed sales charts for 2023. As most of you will know, Sony’s and Nintendo’s consoles are the most dominant in the UK, and Xbox players tend to focus more on their digital libraries. As such, it will be interesting to see how Hogwarts Legacy has performed on Xbox when also including digital sales. “Hogwarts Legacy was also the final weekly No.1 of 2023, according to GfK data”, GamesIndustry.biz writes. “It rose three places to No.1 despite a 33% drop in sales week-on-week. It beat Super Mario Bros Wonder, which holds No.2 position despite a 63% fall in sales week-on-week.”
Hogwarts Legacy is available worldwide now for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Here’s what we wrote about the game in our launch review last year:
Hogwarts Legacy is, for better or worse, an entertaining and engaging game. By far the best digital version of the wizarding world, it offers a vast swathe of things to do. Even the more mundane elements (bandit camps!) are improved by a robust combat system that genuinely makes you feel like you’re a part of the Harry Potter universe.
