When looking at mechanical keyboards in the market, the one thing that is evident from the get-go is that there is no shortage of excellent boards available to try out. So, how do you beat the norm and create something that is already available and works as intended? Well, Lofree got an idea and decided to create a low-profile keyboard that is not only sleek but also the smoothest low-profile mechanical keyboard available on the market. You use it once, and you ask yourself, “If something like this is possible, why are other companies not doing this?” The Lofree Flow is now my favorite low-profile keyboard, and although it has a couple of flaws, it is really, really hard to beat.
Lofree Flow the thockiest low-profile mechanical keyboard in the market
So what’s so special about the Lofree Flow that the other low-profile keyboards, like the Keychron K1 Max and the NuPhy Air60 V2, don’t have? Well, for starters, the Kailh Full POM switches and gasket-mounted construction allow the keyboard to be super, super smooth when typing. If typing is not something that is a priority to you, then another thing that makes this keyboard worth having is the fact that it has one of the best constructions you can ask for in any keyboard. You can see the diagram below to get a better understanding of why the keyboard sounds the way it does.
The good thing is that Lofree Flow is available in black and white with the choice of either phantom switches or ghost switches, depending on your color choice. It is a bummer, but the keyboard does come with a hot-swapped PCB, so if you want to go for different switches in the future, it should not really be an issue.
Unboxing the Lofree Flow is pretty standard and straightforward. There are no fancy tools provided in the box. There is just a braided cable, along with the keyboard itself. This might not be a lot for several people, but considering the use case of this keyboard, I think these accessories are more than enough. Now, bear in mind that this is in no way being marketed as a gaming keyboard, but if you want to game on it, I would highly suggest that you do it in wired mode–more on that later.
Once you get the keyboard out of the box, you are presented with an extremely sleek board with an all-aluminum construction. The keyboard is cold to the touch and feels extremely sturdy. After reviewing several keyboards in the past, this might as well be the most premium-feeling keyboard, and I love how soft the keys feel. There were times when I was looking for excuses to use the Lofree Flow just because the typing experience on it and the fit and finish of the keyboard were so, so good.
Flipping the Lofree Flow, you are welcomed at pre-installed and fixed feet that provide you with a 3.9-degree tilt. I would have preferred flip-out feet like the ones you have on K1 Max or Air60 V2, as that would have allowed the keyboard to sit on a laptop’s keyboard, but Lofree decided to go against that, and I don’t understand why. Yes, this keyboard looks great sitting on a desk, but I believe that it would have been better if it could also sit on your laptop’s keyboard.
Once it is out of the box, all you have to do is flick the switch on the back, and the keyboard is off to the races. Do keep in mind that the Lofree Flow is wired and Bluetooth only, so you are not getting that 2.4GHz goodness. If you are typing, the Bluetooth mode is consistent, but for gaming, I would highly suggest you use the keyboard in wired mode to enjoy a higher polling rate.
Typing on the Lofree Flow is an absolute joy. I have been using low-profile mechanical keyboards for some time now, and I can go out on a limb and say that it is the best-sounding keyboard I have used, especially when you are looking at the low-profile category, and the best thing is that you are getting such a thocky sound without any mods. Now, bear in mind making a low-profile keyboard sound good can often be difficult because there is not enough space inside the case to make mods, but Lofree has managed to do just that and still keep the thickness of the board at just 10mm, which is commendable, to say the least.
People who don’t like RGB have a reason to rejoice, as the Lofree Flow is the first keyboard in a long, long time that does not ship with RGB lighting. You are only getting a white backlight option with two RGB light bars at the bottom that add a tasteful look to the keyboard and create a really nice ambiance as well. Now, normally, I don’t have any issues with the keyboard being RGB or non-RGB, but I wish the keycaps that Lofree uses were shine through. Now, I know this might not be a big deal, but if you are working in the dark, turning on the lights is not going to do you much favor as you might not be able to see the legends printed on the keys. Which, in my opinion, defeats the purpose.
The lights on the underside are a nice touch, however. There is no software involved, and the entirety of the control is on the keyboard. You can make the adjustments as you please. I am glad that Lofree has decided to go against adding software because, for a keyboard so hell-bent on simplicity, having software would have just made things more complicated, and if you have not guessed it already, there is nothing complicated about the Lofree Flow, and I believe that is one of the best things about it.
If you are wondering whether the Lofree Flow is the best keyboard for you, then I’m going to make it simple for you. If you are looking for a keyboard that is going to deliver a stellar typing experience that will sound good and have premium build quality at the same time, then this keyboard is most certainly for you. At just 10mm thick, it can slide into your backpack with ease and works well with multiple devices thanks to its Bluetooth connectivity.
However, if you are looking for a keyboard that delivers a lightning-fast typing experience, then this is not for you. Being a typist/writer, I type really fast, and there were times when I could feel the latency in the board because of a lower polling rate. The keyboard also does not have adjustable feet, which kind of defeats the purpose of a keyboard that is fit for a laptop-based setup.
I will not call Lofree Flow the best low-profile mechanical keyboard, but the fact that this is the company’s first attempt at making a low-profile keyboard., I will give it full points for the effort. Making a low-profile keyboard sound good is something that many companies have not managed to do, and for the longest time, the modding community has taken this task upon themselves to make customizations. This keyboard offers the best typing experience straight out of the box, and for a lot of consumers, this is exactly what matters. I can go as far as saying that if Lofree didn’t put its branding on the keyboard, I would think that Apple has made it because not only does it feel like an Apple product, but the simple, no-nonsense user experience also reminds me of Apple, and I mean that as a compliment.
The Lofree Flow is indeed the smoothest low-profile mechanical keyboard in the market that delivers an experience unlike any other. It has a lot of redeeming qualities, but Bluetooth’s low polling rate often holds it back from delivering a flawless typing experience every single time.
