Just a month after the release of Lossless Scaling Frame Generation 2.0, the software has been updated with a new mode that can triple your frame rate.
Version 2.1 can now generate two intermediate frames, effectively tripling the frame rate with an X3 frame generation mode. This mode increases GPU load by around 1.7x compared to the X2 mode. However, the performance of LSFG 2.1 and LSFG 1.1 has been optimized to be 20% faster in X2 mode compared to the previous version.
The developer of Lossless Scaling claims that the X3 mode has no additional latency compared to the X2 mode since the latency is affected by the base frame rate and when the GPU is fully utilized. For the best experience in terms of both fluidity and latency, it is recommended that you set the game frame rate to one-third of the monitor’s refresh rate in X3 mode. The minimum recommended base frame rate remains the same as in X2 mode: 30 fps for 1080p and 40 fps for 1440p.
The new version of Lossless Scaling also introduced a new behavior when the final frame rate exceeds the monitor’s refresh rate. Previously, the software rendered all necessary frames, some of which were later discarded when displayed. Lossless Scaling will now skip the rendering of extra frames while maintaining the correct frame rate, so the result should be very similar to the old behavior but much more resource-efficient. That said, the developer notes that while a higher base frame rate is better for latency purposes, forcing LS to skip frames may not result in the best smoothness.
As a footnote, since the Lossless Scaling framerate will now never exceed the refresh rate, the ‘Draw FPS’ option will also output captured frames when using DXGI capture for convenience and to identify issues.
As a reminder, this frame generation is universal and theoretically works on all PC games.
