When Apple released the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar four years ago, one of the surprises was that the computer started completely silently. Macs had been chiming at startup for over 30 years, so for long-time users it was a strange feeling.
But now the startup sound is back. Several developers AppleInsider has spoken to confirm that their Macs, after installing the beta version of macOS Big Sur, have heard the familiar launch sounds. This also applies to models that have never had it, like the aforementioned MacBook Pro and Mac mini from 2018.
In Apple’s roundup of all the news in Big Sur, the company writes that the system sounds are “all-new and even more pleasing to the ear”.
