The latest Newzoo report for December 2024 has been released, which goes into detail about the PC and console engagement across six markets, as well as the revenue rankings. Since it was December, a lot of games that had fallen off of the charts have now made a return, thanks to holiday sales giving hefty discounts to games and bumping them up the charts. Some titles in the rankings aren’t too surprising though, as Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile 2 continue to take top positions.
Games such as Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and even Indiana Jones and the Great Circle performed very well in the month of December. with Marvel Rivals being free to play, it meant that a greater audience had access to the game. The launch of Marvel Rivals saw the game shoot up to the third position, with many live service titles dropping below Marvel Rivals. It even saw the largest decline of Overwatch 2, which dropped from ninth to twelfth.
It’s no surprise that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle did incredibly well for itself when it was released. Not only was it included in the Day One Game Pass, meaning those who wanted to take it for a test spin could do so at a significantly lower cost, but it also meant that people had access to a very well-developed, high-quality game via Game Pass. It did well for itself but didn’t quite break any of the top spots. It landed at 17 in the engagement rankings. However, considering the game isn’t available on PlayStation, this is a great feat for the game.
In terms of revenue, Grand Theft Auto V saw a significant boost in December, thanks to the Agents of Sabotage DLC that was released. It helped shift the game up by eight spots, leaving it to take the eighth spot on the leaderboard.
Thanks to heavy discounts, titles like Hogwarts Legacy, Baldur’s Gate 3, and Cyberpunk 2077 all made their way back into the top 20 of revenue, as there were holiday sales across the board.
A lot of the rankings are expected from the month of December, but most surprisingly, it was Gran Turismo 7. Thanks to the 25th anniversary of the franchise, it gained a whopping 25 spot increase from 39 to 14, helping it gain a standing in the top 20 once again.
Much like the month prior, EA Sports College Football 25 continued to do well for itself. It managed to climb five spots up the rankings to take the tenth position, as the game received a huge 50% discount on all platforms. EA Sports College Football 25 has been wildly successful, and this helped it stay in the top spots.
A lot of the titles that made it into the top 20 rankings were thanks to the holiday discounts, as is typical around any of the major global holidays. Thanks to events like the Steam Winter Sale, people are more likely to purchase games in this period, and thus, premium titles get boosted in the rankings.
It’s likely that titles like Marvel Rivals and Path of Exile 2 will continue to do well, as Marvel Rivals currently as a Spring Festival event taking place, as well as the first full season in-game. Additionally, Path of Exile 2 is in Early Access, with plenty of changes coming in the future thanks to Grinding Gear Games.
