Metacore has ended development on co-op builder Everdale almost 20 months after it acquired the title from fellow Finnish developer Supercell.
In a blog post, CEO Mika Tammenkoski said the studio was “unable to find a path to improve its market fit and make it a sustainable business”.
He explained that, following the acquisition of the title, the studio had hoped to better understand the motivations of Everdale’s “strong player community” and turn the game into a sustainable business.
The team was unable to find a way to improve its market fit to keep serving its audience for the long-term, however.
The Everdale IP has now been returned to Supercell, which had also previously ended development on the title in 2022 prior to Metacore taking the reins.
Moving on
“After much consideration, we have made the difficult choice to discontinue our work on Everdale and return its IP to Supercell,” said Tammenkoski.
“This has been a hard decision for us, especially knowing what a keen player community there was behind Everdale.
“While this process didn’t offer us the results we initially hoped for, this time spent working on Everdale has offered us a lot of learnings and insight. We hope to see those learnings put into practice with our new games development in the future.”
It’s not the only title that Metacore has ended development on. Previously the studio had soft-launched merge game title Sails of Fury. The title was pulled from the App Store and Google Play in June 2024.
Metacore is best known for its flagship merge game Merge Mansion. The studio recently revealed that the title had surpassed $500 million in lifetime revenue.
The studio has strong ties to Supercell, which was a lead investor in providing a $180 million credit line in 2021 to scale Merge Mansion.
Metacore is one of the top companies attending Pocket Gamer Connects Helsinki, which takes place on October 1st and 2nd.
