Back in February, Microsoft launched the Official Xbox Wireless Headset for $99.99, including support for Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone: X. Now we’re getting a wired version and a significantly cheaper price point.
The Xbox Stereo Headset is set for release on Sept. 21 for $59.99. The low price doesn’t mean Micorsoft has skimped on quality though, with Jessica Tsujikawa, Sr. Product Marketing Manager at Xbox stating they wanted to bring “more value to the entry-level headset category, including clear microphone performance, high-quality ear cushions, and a volume control dial on the right earcup.”
The headphones are designed with long play sessions in mind, offering a lightweight design meant to spread pressure evenly across your head. Connection to an Xbox is achieved by plugging the 3.5mm cable into an Xbox wireless controller, but you can use the headset with any device you like.
We’ll have to wait for the reviews to judge sound quality, but Tsujikawa said, “the team tuned the headset to replicate the intended audio recording source that the creators wanted you to experience.” That should result in great audio “across gaming, team chat, music, and movies.” And just like with the wireless version, Microsoft included support for Windows Sonic, Dolby Atmos, and DTS Headphone: X.
When PCMag reviewed the Xbox Wireless Headset, we found it offered powerful sound and a lightweight, comfortable fit, though you might want to turn down the bass a bit. If we get a similar experience from the wired version while saving $40 in the process, Microsoft will have an instant hit on its hands.
