There could be a sequel to Minecraft Dungeons in the works, according to Xbox leaker and dataminer X0XLEAK, who reports that the so-called Project Spicewood has been in development for at least two years. They also listed some of the locations and points of interest that should be in the game:
- Honeycomb Fields: Undermill, Farm, Island, Lake, Fields, Forest.
- Desert: Cliff, Fortress, Mountain, Village, Icelagoon.
- Forest: Deep dark entrance, Outpost entrance, Witchzone, Shady Forest.
Minecraft Dungeons launched in May 2020, in the middle of the COVID pandemic. The game didn’t get the warmest reception; here on Wccftech, Rosh Kelly gave it a 7.6 out of 10 score, pointing to its limitations in keeping the player interested for a decent amount of time.
Minecraft exists in a strange state. It was a global phenomenon that reshaped the games industry and the way the world viewed it, but that was about a decade ago. Fortnite has since taken its crown, and now Minecraft sits a bit in the background. It’s still incredibly popular, but it doesn’t quite get the attention it used to. And with the first generation of Minecraft kids now in their late teens or older, its audience seems less well defined. Minecraft Dungeons is clearly a game designed for a younger audience and it feels like despite the freeform nature that attracted so many children to Minecraft initially, this new game doesn’t trust its audience to understand what exactly they are playing.
The combat in Minecraft Dungeons is a great deal of fun, with all the abilities you can throw around and all the enemies you’ll face. But thanks to its too small of a sample of loot and too short of a campaign, the experience can be over before you even realize it’s done.
However, the cooperative dungeon crawler game that Mojang Studios co-developed with Double Eleven had reached more than 25 million unique players as of September 2023, evidently making it worthwhile to create a sequel. What would you like to see in a Minecraft Dungeons 2? Let us know below!
