The fully upgradable Windows laptop from Framework is now up for pre-order for US customers, starting at $999.
Customers can place orders on the Framework website. The 13.5-inch laptop is made up entirely of modular parts, including the motherboard, which you can easily swap out and replace.
“We made repairs and upgrades incredibly straightforward. The only tool you need is the screwdriver we include in the box,” the company says. “Every module has a QR code on it that you can scan for step-by-step instructions, support information, and a link to order a replacement from the Framework Marketplace.”
After unveiling the product in February, Framework has now settled on pricing for the various configurations, which will use Intel’s “Tiger Lake” 11th-generation processors. All models will also feature a 2,256-by-1,504 display, a 1080p web camera, a keyboard with a 1.5mm key travel, and aluminum casing.
The $999 Base configuration:
- Intel Core i5-1135G7 processor (8M Cache, up to 4.20GHz)
- 8GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 6
- Windows 10 Home
The $1,399 Performance configuration:
- Intel Core i7-1165G7 (12M Cache, up to 4.70GHz)
- 16GB DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 6
- Windows 10 Home
The $1,999 Professional configuration:
- Intel Core i7-1185G7 (12M Cache, up to 4.80GHz)
- 32GB DDR4, 1TB NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 6 vPro
- Windows 10 Pro
The company is also selling a “do-it-yourself” DIY Edition of the laptop, which will start at $749. Customers can then configure it to their liking, and select the processor, memory, RAM, and OS.
Owners can also customize the Framework by buying and then adding various modules to the hardware. “Our Expansion Card system lets you choose the ports you want and which side you want them on, selecting from up to four of USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort, MicroSD, ultra-fast 250GB and 1TB storage, and more,” the company said. “Magnetic-attach bezels are color-customizable to match your style, and the keyboard language can be swapped too.”
The company plans on finalizing the prices for the modules and replaceable parts soon.
If you’re interested, Framework is encouraging customers to place pre-orders before the stock runs out, citing the ongoing chip shortage.
“We’re ramping into mass production now, but worldwide supply constraints this year limit the number of Framework Laptops we can manufacture in the first few months,” the company said. “To manage through this, we’ll be taking pre-orders in batches, with the first batch shipping by the end of July.
“To make pre-ordering as easy as possible, we’ll only be taking a refundable $100 deposit at the time of order,” the company added. “We’ll give you a heads up when we’re preparing to ship your system and then collect the balance of the order. We also offer a 30-day return guarantee, in the improbable event that you don’t love your Framework Laptop when you receive it.” The laptops also have a one-year warranty.
The company plans on opening up pre-orders for Canadian customers in the next few weeks. It’ll then expand the launch to additional countries in Europe and Asia before year’s end. Stay tuned for our review.
