Player spending in Scopely’s mega money maker Monopoly Go was down 58.3% in October from its March highs, according to AppMagic estimates.
Scopely’s hit achieved record a record of $282.4 million in gross revenue during March, which boosted the whole genre’s Q1 2024 revenue by 34% alone.
However, last month the title hit its lowest player spending levels since July 2023. But falling from such lofty heights still meant snapping up another $117.8 million and ranking as the world’s eighth top grossing mobile game across the App Store and Google Play.
Those earnings are likely higher when considering sales from its web shop.
Rolling the dice
Monopoly Go has achieved fame and fortune since its 2023 release, smashing industry records and racing past $3 billion in revenue in barely over a year.
Monthly earnings have declined since the game entered its second year, falling to $240.1 million in April and down to $192.4 million in May.
The only break in this month-on-month decline came in August when the title generated $149.1 million. August saw a number of events take place like Dino Treasures, Rocket Partners, multiple Golden Blitzes and the return of team-based multiplayer event Tycoon Racers.
Revenue dropped again in September despite a crossover with Marvel, sinking to $140.1 million, though this was still an improvement on July.
Now, Monopoly Go has employed A-list celebrity power like Jason Momoa, Chris Pratt and Keke Palmer in a new trailer to encourage friends to play together. The trailer also featured a talking Mr. Monopoly – voiced for the first time in Monopoly Go by comedian Will Ferrell.
It marks the beginning of a “long-term creative concept” to further promote the game, with Will Ferrell set to reprise his role in future campaigns.
Whether recurring star power can turn around Monopoly Go’s fortunes or not, monthly player spending hasn’t dropped below $100 million in over a year – meaning this is still an incredibly lucrative game.
It’s also amassed almost $3.2 billion in earnings in its lifetime, more than earning Scopely the top spot in our Top 50 Mobile Game Makers list.
Scopely is currently a finalist at the Pocket Gamer Awards 2024, including in the Best Mobile Publisher category. The winners will be announced at an in-person ceremony in London on December 6th – you can register to network with the industry’s finest on the night right here.
