Technology has been a holiday helper for a long time now but this year it has outdone itself.
With COVID standing in the way of shopping in stores or visiting family and friends to give them gifts in person, Reviews.org took a look at holiday purchasing in the United States. It found that 20% of people did all their holiday shopping entirely online this year, compared with only 5% being digital-only last year. The same percentage, 1 in 5 people, opted to send 50% of their gifts in a purely digital format, like streaming service subscriptions, video game codes, and e-gift cards.
Overall people spent about $1,865 on gifts this year. Tech made for a popular gift-giving option in the form of large electronics, accounting for $475.63 of that and personal electronics at $309.97. Digital gifts made up $198.40 of that on average. Tech even figured into the toys and games category, with the most popular gifts being the Sony PlayStation 5 (or the promise of one) and the Nintendo Switch.
