Netflix is giving its own content the Comic-Con treatment. Next month, the streaming platform will hold its first-ever fan event in a bid to generate excitement for Netflix’s upcoming slate of shows and movies.
The name of the streaming platform’s free event, Tudum (pronounced Too-Doom), may seem odd, but it’s a nod to the sound you hear before you start a show or movie on Netflix.
The three-hour event will be held virtually on Sept. 25 and feature numerous trailers and guest appearances from actors in over 70 Netflix series and specials. “It’s our first ever global TUDUM event, and our goal is simple: to entertain and honor Netflix fans from across the globe,” the company wrote in a blog post.
In a video, Netflix teased that Hollywood actors, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, Henry Cavill, Idris Elba, and celebrities from foreign markets will be speaking at the event.
Netflix is holding Tudum when the company is facing intense competition in the video-streaming market. It now has to contend with Disney+, HBO Max, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount+, and Peacock, to name a few, which are all investing heavily in content to attract viewers.
There are also signs Netflix’s subscriber growth is slowing. In this year’s Q2, the company only added 1.54 million new paid subscribers from across the globe. In the same period, Netflix also lost 430,000 subscribers in the North American market. However, the company is predicting growth will pick up in the coming months as Netflix introduces new content.
The Tudum event kicks off on Sept. 25 at 9 a.m. PST/12 p.m. EST. Ironically, the event will be livestreamed on Netflix’s YouTube channel, in addition to Twitter and Twitch.
