Nexon’s mobile iteration of Welsh-inspired MMORPG Mabinogi is set for release this March.
While an exact release date has yet to be set, a new cinematic “Coming Soon” trailer for the aptly named Mabinogi Mobile has confirmed a launch more than four years in the making.
This follows the mobile game’s initial reveal during Nexon’s Q4 2020 earnings call.
That reveal was made alongside Dungeon & Fighter: Mobile, which went on to become 2024’s most lucrative new game in China and one of the year’s most successful games overall. Backed by a long-running IP, the beat ‘em up mobile RPG took less than half a year to surpass $1 billion on iOS alone.
A long legacy
Mabinogi also has a long history, with the original PC title, developed by devCAT studio, dating back to 2004 in South Korea and 2008 in the US. While named after the Welsh literary collection Mabinogion, the PC version didn’t reach Europe until 2010.
More than a decade later – two decades, in South Korea – the new mobile adaptation will blend a nostalgic reimagining of the original with fresh storylines, characters, gameplay and adventures. For now, the March release date is only confirmed for South Korea.
As reported by GamingonPhone, Mabinogi Mobile was initially expected to release in 2024, but no release came. In the four years since its original reveal, cel-shaded, anime-esque mobile games have found explosive popularity with the likes of HoYoverse’s Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail making billions of dollars.
