HoYoverse’s RPG giant Genshin Impact has surpassed an estimated $5 billion in mobile revenue in mainland China, according to Niko Partners.
The games statistics service noted that over $2.2 billion of that player spending has occurred on iOS, based on Sensor Tower data, while the remainder is an estimation of spending on third-party app stores.
Genshin Impact is also projected to surpass $4 billion on mobile outside of China this year, “on track” to reach $10 billion across iOS and Android in 2025.
Increasing competition
Niko Partners noted that Genshin Impact’s mobile revenue has declined over the past year and attributed this to an increasingly competitive RPG landscape.
On mobile, the past 12 months have seen new RPG competitors like Kuro Games’ Wuthering Waves, Netmarble’s Solo Leveling: Arise, and SumZap’s Jujutsu Kaisen Phantom Parade join the market.
Furthermore, HoYoverse’s titles are believed to be competing with each other, with Niko Partners arguing there is indeed cannibalisation between Genshin Impact, Honkai: Star Rail and the newest release, Zenless Zone Zero.
Cannibalisation between HoYoverse games has been speculated for some time and the rate of decline over the past year only fuels the argument, though players choosing to spend in Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero instead still means revenue going to the same developer.
“New data from Sensor Tower shows that Genshin Impact surpassed $2.2 billion in player spending across iOS in mainland China this month, and Niko Partners estimates that the game has grossed over $5 billion in total when accounting for third party app stores,” Niko Partners said.
“The game has seen declining revenues over the past 12 months, with notably lower player spending compared to the first three years.”
Despite the declines seen in Genshin Impact’s mobile earnings, Zenless Zone Zero has surpassed $150 million in its first three months and HoYoverse once again earned a place in this year’s Top 50 Mobile Game Makers list.
