Nintendo has confirmed that its unannounced Switch 2 will be backward-compatible with games from the original Switch.
The company’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, took to Twitter to share the news after a corporate management policy briefing.
“At today’s corporate management policy briefing, we announced that Nintendo Switch software will also be playable on the successor to Nintendo Switch,” Nintendo wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
“Nintendo Switch Online will be available on the successor to Nintendo Switch as well. Further information about the successor to Nintendo Switch, including its compatibility with Nintendo Switch, will be announced at a later date.”

Non-stop sales
The Japanese firm also noted that it has sold 4.72 million Switch units in the past three months. While this is a 31% drop compared to the same period last year, it means the company has now sold 146 million Switch units till date.
During the presentation, Nintendo shared that: “More software has been played on Nintendo Switch than on any other Nintendo hardware.”
In addition, Switch Online subscriptions have slightly decreased to around 34 million members, while the uptake of the higher-tier version with the Expansion Pack is growing.
Nintendo is expected to make an official announcement in early 2025 with more details about the Switch 2.
