OnlyFans is hitting the brakes on its upcoming porn ban.
“We have secured assurances necessary to support our diverse creator community and have suspended the planned October 1 policy change,” the content subscription site tweeted this morning. “OnlyFans stands for inclusion and we will continue to provide a home for all creators.”
So far, OnlyFans hasn’t elaborated on the change. But the statement suggests someone in the banking industry is stepping up to support the site, which is best known for helping people sell nudes and porn.
Yesterday, in an interview with The Financial Times, OnlyFans CEO Tim Stokely blamed the upcoming porn ban on the banking industry, saying it had no choice but to comply. According to him, certain banks refused to do business with OnlyFans due to the pornographic content on the site. As a result, the site risked losing its ability to process credit card payments from users.
“JPMorgan Chase is particularly aggressive in closing accounts of sex workers or… any business that supports sex workers,” he claimed.
OnlyFans didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. But it plans on messaging creators with more details about the decision shortly.
The suspension is good news for the thousands of porn workers on OnlyFans, who rely on the site to make a living. Many were already preparing to leave the platform. However, it remains unclear if OnlyFans will reverse course again down the line and once again ban porn.
During his interview with the Financial Times, Stokely also called out media companies for unfairly targeting OnlyFans over child porn and other illegal content that allegedly lurks on the site, when other mainstream social media platforms struggle to take down the same content.
In December, another adult video platform, PornHub, lost access to online credit card services after an op-ed piece from The New York Times documented the child porn and rape videos that can circulate on the site.
