Palworld has been topping up the charts regarding player counts, but this has come with a “cost,” as the developer Pocketpair reveals that they are spending huge on maintaining servers.
The CEO, Takuro Mizobe, revealed the information in a post, exclaiming that Palworld is getting costly to keep the servers online. In a post on X, he disclosed that maintaining the servers has cost the firm a whopping 70 million yen, equivalent to around $475,000. Moreover, Takuro joked about the high costs as well, claiming that the firm would go “bankrupt from server fees,” although it is highly likely that this would ever be possible.
Palworld’s success in the markets is evident by the volume of copies sold recently. Pocketpair’s game has exceeded 19 million players between Steam’s 12 million and Xbox’s 7 million, making it a likely contender for the biggest game of 2024, even this early in the year. The open-world survival crafting game with monster collection mechanics had sold one million in eight hours, two in twenty-four, three in forty, five million in three days, and six in four days. The game has, therefore, generated well over $200 million from Steam sales alone. As such, Palworld is well-secured, and the server costs wouldn’t bother them too much.
In other news, the famous modder Toasted Shoes has finally released the “legally” distinct mod for Palworld, which he announced on a previous occasion. The new mod has completely different visuals, showing no clear resemblance to Pokemon creatures and characters other than a similar design and fashion tone. Interestingly, the supposedly “Ash” in the modded Palworld looks nothing like the Pokemon one, and even “Pikachu” apparently represents a rat.
While some elements of the mod still resemble the general idea behind Pokemon, it’s not quite like the real thing. You can download the mod through this link, but don’t get your expectations too high.
