San Francisco-based tech startup Petcube on Thursday announced the launch of its most affordable treat-dispensing smart pet camera yet.
The $124.95 Petcube Bites 2 Lite lets you keep tabs on your pet remotely, and interact with them from wherever you are with two-way audio communication and a treat dispenser. Like the original, $199 Petcube Bites 2, the Bites 2 Lite features a 1080p camera with a 160-degree wide-angle view and built-in night vision.
So why does it cost $75 less than the standard model? For starters, the Petcube Bites 2 is made of aluminum, for a sleeker, more durable frame than the Bites 2 Lite’s hard plastic exterior. And the Petcube Bites 2 Lite only has one microphone as opposed to the four mics in the standard model. Finally, while the Bites 2 Lite is compatible with Amazon Alexa through a secondary smart speaker, the Bites 2 has Alexa built in and doubles as its own smart speaker.
“Our team reengineered Bites with a key purpose — to make the camera more affordable without compromising the quality, and to help more families connect with their pets,” Petcube CEO Yarosalv Azhnyuk said in a statement.
In our review of the Petcube Bites 2, we noted that it was a bit pricey and the camera wasn’t too sharp. However, the level of interactivity it provides is definitely a big selling point for pet owners. Check back for a full review of the Bites 2 Lite, which is on sale now via Amazon.
