Today during Sony’s latest State of Play showcase, we got a fresh peek at Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding 2 – On the Beach, but it turns out that’s not all the legendary developer had arguably more exciting store.
At the end of the show, Kojima and PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst showed up to announce “Physint,” Kojima’s return to the action-stealth genre he created and popularized with Metal Gear Solid. That’s promising enough, but it seems this project won’t just be a video game, but rather a whole multimedia enterprise that aims to “to transcend the barriers between film and video games.” Perhaps meaningfully, it was then revealed that the announcement actually took place at Sony’s Columbia Pictures movie lot. You can check out the announcement video for Physint for yourself, below.
Interesting stuff! “Physint” doesn’t quite have the ring of Metal Gear Solid, but I can overlook a clunky title if I’m getting more Kojima-brand espionage action. Here’s what Kojima had to say about the project…
“Yes, it will be a brand new, original IP, a next-generation action espionage game. Preparations are underway, but production will begin in earnest at Kojima Productions after Death Stranding 2. We have extensive experience with Sony, having grown the espionage genre together for almost 30 years. Also, Sony not only does games, but also music and movies. It will definitely be a strong collaboration. Two years from now, I will celebrate the 40th anniversary of my game production career. I am confident this will be a culmination of my work.
We plan to bring together cutting-edge technology and talent from around the world to create it. Of course, it is an interactive game, but it also a movie at the same time, in terms of look, story, theme, cast, acting, fashion, and sound. With this title, we hope to transcend the barriers between film and video games.”
No word yet on when Physint may arrive, but presumably, it will be a PlayStation exclusive. That Kojima sure likes to keep busy! What do you think? Excited for his return to the stealth genre? And what about this game-movie hybrid angle?
