Sleep tracker game Pokémon Sleep is going spooky for Halloween, featuring some nightmare-fuelled Pokémon in a change of pace for the peaceful title.
While the gameplay is still geared around a good night’s sleep, The Pokémon Company’s health app introduced the Ghost-type balloon Drifloon earlier in October – infamous in the lore for floating away with any child who touches it.
More recently, on October 28th, Sleep kicked off its Halloween event in full with a Double Candy Research event and the introduction of Ghost-type ragdoll Mimikyu, whose true form is always concealed; in the lore, a scholar who did discover its true form “died from the shock”.
So, Pokémon Sleep is clearly getting into the haunted spirit with these latest additions and is making the most out of Halloween in a monetary sense too.
Trick or treat
According to AppMagic data, Pokémon Sleep has generated $128.3 million in lifetime revenue between Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store. The title surpassed the $100 million milestone one week before its first anniversary this July.
Its revenue typically boosts around events that leverage Legendary Pokémon or feature bonus rewards for a good night’s sleep. The latter more so forms Sleep’s strategy this Halloween, with a Double Candy Research event running from October 28th to November 4th.
During this time, players can get triple their usual candy yield for their first sleep research of the day and Ghost-type helper Pokémon will discover extra items while exploring. Their skills are more likely to trigger than other types’ and fan favourites like Gastly, Haunter and Gengar are also more likely to appear.
Furthermore, three limited-time bundles were launched on October 28th to celebrate Halloween. They feature a range of resources like candy and incense. The largest bundle also guarantees finding the newly added Mimikyu after a sleep session, costing almost $50 in premium currency.
This means that on October 28th, the launch of the Double Candy Research event, three new bundles, and Mimikyu’s debut all occurred in a single day, resulting in a 107% revenue spike over the day prior.
Up from $161,000 on October 27th, players spent $332,000 on the 28th. This increase largely sustained into the 29th with another $331,000 generated.
Spending has started to decline again since, as is normal for the game – typically spiking again when another event starts.
Of course, Pokémon Sleep is far from the only mobile game to be monetising Halloween.
