The long-running survival-action Predator movie franchise will be continuing in 2022 with a forthcoming prequel titled Prey. According to Variety, the film will stream on Hulu in the United States and on Star internationally next summer.
It’s been known for quite some time now that another Predator movie was being developed, but this information was all finally revealed during Disney+ Day. The fifth entry in the Predator series is directed by Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane), and the official loglline is: “Set in the world of the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, the action-thriller follows Naru, the skilled warrior who fiercely protects her tribe against a highly-evolved alien predator.”
Indigenous actor Amber Midthunder (Legion) will play Naru. According to Disney, a character who wants to “prove her worth as a warrior [and] certainly gets her chance when she comes face-to-face with the most dangerous hunter of all time, the other-worldly predator.” Based on the synopsis, it seems that this movie will also document the titular creature’s journey to Earth.
As the pandemic continues, there are not clear plans just yet as to whether Prey will be released in theaters.
The Predator franchise began in 1987 with Arnold Schwarzenegger as star. Prey will be the first Predator film since 2018’s The Predator, directed by Shane Black. Earlier in the canon, Moments of Extraction and Crucified, two prequel short films were collected onto Predators’ 2010 home release.
November 12’s Disney+ Day offered up a lot of big announcements about upcoming TV shows and movies coming to the service. The first sizzle reel for the Star Wars Obi-Wan show arrived, which featured director Deborah Chow and star Ewan McGregor talking about the upcoming series. The Big Hero 6 spinoff Baymax got its first trailer, and Baymax is just as charming as you remember. Willow got a “meet the cast” video that is way funnier than it needs to be. Marvel made a lot of announcements about upcoming TV series. And while it didn’t happen during Disney+ Day, the first reactions to Marvel’s Hawkeye hit social media.
