One of December’s free PlayStation Plus games is a new version of the PS5 launch title Godfall, called the Challenger Edition. But what exactly is this version of the game? In a blog post, game director Daniel Nordlander confirmed that the Challenger Edition includes Godfall’s three endgame modes, but none of the preceding story content from the base game or the Fire & Darkness expansions.
The Challenger Edition launches on December 7, the day it goes free on PS Plus, and it will be remain free until January 3. After that, people can buy it for $15 USD. The Challenger Edition is also coming to the Epic Games Store on PC and it will be free from December 9-16.
Players who want to play the full campaign and the expansions are advised to pick up the Deluxe edition, which normally sells for $60 but is currently on sale for $30 through December 23.
Picking up the Challenger Edition immediately boosts your character to max level, 50, and this gives you a “plethora of skill points” to assign and high-level weapons to use. The three endgame modes that are playable in the Challenger Edition include the following (written by the developer):
- Lightbringer, a battle against an all-consuming darkness that threatens to snuff out all light from the realms of Aperion. Players willing to persevere through selected banes will receive increasingly greater rewards – and face ever more challenging hordes until the blighted Heart of Darkness is banished in an epic final battle.
- Dreamstones, engage in randomized encounters by reliving the memories of Orin and gain unique rewards each time you play. The curses bestowed on the aptly named Cursed Loot tier can be lifted by completing challenges in Dreamstones.
- Ascended Tower of Trials, put your skills to the test in an ever more challenging climb to the top of the tower gaining boons and facing fierce bosses along the way in the pursuit of juicy loot drops.
New cosmetics are included in the Challenger Edition, and everyone who already bought Godfall gets these for free. The ability to replay story missions is also included.
The Challenger Edition also comes with new quests, and completing them gets you more loot. What’s more, the Challenger Edition supports cross-play across the standard edition and Challenger Edition, as well as between PS4 and PS5.
Godfall: Challenger Edition’s matchmaking and endgame co-op is compatible with all editions of Godfall and supports cross-gen play on PlayStation 4 and 5.
A spokesperson for developer Counterplay told Eurogamer that the Challenger Edition is “not a trial.”
Godfall, which is published by Gearbox, was a launch title for the PS5 in 2020. GameSpot’s Godfall review scored it a 5/10. “This is a shallow game bolstered by decent combat that struggles to bear the weight of an entire game,” Richard Wakeling said.
