Later today, developer Housemarque is set to release a first patch for the very popular new PlayStation 5 game Returnal, but it comes with a warning for anyone currently playing the title.
As Videogamer reports, Housemarque tweeted that the patch will go live at 2pm ET today, but automatic updates for the console really need to be turned off before then. Not disabling auto-updates is risky, because if you happen to be playing the game when the update triggers, you’ll be taken back to the game’s menu screen and all unsaved progress will be lost.
Returnal has received excellent reviews across the board and acts as a showcase for what the PS5 hardware is capable of. It’s also incredibly challenging as a game, meaning you really won’t appreciate losing any progress thanks to a patch pulling you out of the action.
As the PlayStation support website explains, to disable automatic updates, navigate to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates on the PS5 front-end. Then turn off “Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode.” That way, you can patch the game at your leisure and without losing any progress (just remember to turn it back on afterwards).
