Razor scooters first made a splash more than two decades ago, and while they haven’t really gone anywhere—a $500 Jeep-branded, rugged Razor scooter was announced just two weeks ago—the brand is tapping into the nostalgia of its original customers with the electric Razor Icon.
The Icon is taller and heavier than the original in order to accommodate its now-adult riders. A 300-watt motor powers the scooter at up to 18mph with a 18-mile range.
Staying true to the stylings of the original, the Razor Icon features aluminum construction and offers colorful, matching handlebar grips and tires. The scooter still folds in half, even if the handles don’t pop off like they used to.
This new model doesn’t use the tiny, roller-blade style wheels of the original, instead opting for an 8.5-inch airless tire to better handle bumpy terrain and high speeds. Razor has also kitted the scooter out with tail lights, a headlight, a kickstand, and a lockpoint for fitting a bike lock or chain. The whole unit weighs in at 26.5 pounds, which Razor suggests is the “lightest in its class.”
“As electric scooters have gained popularity in the last few years, there haven’t been many affordable options on the market,” Razor says. “Getting a smooth ride, with long distance range, and quality you can trust is hard to come by at an affordable price.”
In another throwback, the Razor Icon is on sale via Kickstarter; it’s $549 with an early bird discount and will rise to $599 after the discounted models sell out. That puts it in line with rival scooters from companies like Bird.
As Engadget notes, this is far from Razor’s first electric scooter; it sells dozens of electric scooters, including a few models similar to the Icon.
