At G-Star 2023, Netmarble showcased once again RF ONLINE NEXT, a sci-fi MMO in development for PC and mobile devices with Unreal Engine 5. The South Korean developer acquired the rights to the RF ONLINE franchise in September 2020. The original game, as some of you might recall, was launched in 2004 by CCR, though it only appeared in North America and Europe around two years later.
Just like that game, RF ONLINE NEXT is set on the faraway planet of Novus, where advanced technology is available alongside magic. Gematsu got their hands on a detailed description of the game’s mechanics provided by Netmarble:
The battles in RF ONLINE NEXT are based on science-fiction motifs and provide a unique combat experience compared to other fantasy games. Combatants can choose one of six unique biosuits to enjoy high-octane, skill-based battles. Players can also freely switch between biosuits based on the battle situation. The game also features the ability to summon giant robots to assist in battles or to pilot them.
In addition, RF ONLINE NEXT offers a free-flight system that includes altitude changes, boosts, dynamic landings, and hovering. This allows players to quickly move around and explore the world and can also be used as a strategic element to bolster the overall RF experience.
Many large-scale bosses appear throughout the world of RF ONLINE NEXT. Players will be able to utilize their biosuit piloting skills, giant robot summons, and other players to confront these bosses cooperatively. The game will also feature Realm vs Realm elements emphasized by the previous entry in the RF franchise, allowing players to engage in large-scale battles for key resources.
RF ONLINE NEXT is currently scheduled to launch next year, though it’s unclear whether that’ll be true globally or just locally in South Korea to begin with. More information is likely to appear on the official website at some point.
