Roblox is suing digital game store PlayerAuctions for allegedly violating contracts by facilitating the sale of digital Roblox goods.
As reported by Polygon, Roblox is pushing to shut down these transactions, claiming PlayerAuctions has continued despite multiple cease-and-desist letters. Roblox accuses PlayerAuctions of undermining this business and disrupting its virtual market.
The marketplace offers services like account boosting and in-game item sales, creating gray areas that can lead players to unknowingly violate Roblox’s terms. Roblox claims 12% to 15% of users have been suspended or banned for such violations.
The lawsuit also raises concerns about child safety, as young players are a key demographic. Zynga previously sued PlayerAuctions in 2010 on similar grounds, reaching an undisclosed settlement.
Trademark violation
“Roblox is committed to promoting the safety and security of its users and protecting its intellectual property,” a Roblox spokesperson told Polygon. “Third-party sites like these have no legal affiliation to Roblox, operate unauthorised marketplaces in violation of Roblox’s Terms of Use and Community Standards, and can be confusing to Roblox users.
“The Company will continue to be vigilant to combat unauthorised use of our platform and hold those responsible accountable for their actions.”
In the lawsuit, Roblox further alleges that PlayerAuctions uses its trademarks to confuse users and undermine its business. It claims 8% to 10% of players appealing bans for real-money trading referenced PlayerAuctions.
Roblox has since filed for an injunction to stop trademark use and vows to combat unauthorised platform use.
