Until now, upgrading the storage in your Xbox Series X or Series S console could only be done using a 1TB Expansion Card. That’s changing, as Seagate is introducing 512GB and 2TB cards before the end of the year.
As Xbox Wire reports, the combination of Xbox Game Pass and “four generations of game compatibility” has meant you can easily fill the available storage included with both Xbox Series consoles. However, adding more storage space using an Expansion Card is certainly not cheap and these new cards do nothing to change that.
The existing 1TB card costs $219.99. When the 512GB Expansion Card launches it will cost $139.99, where as anyone looking forward to adding another 2TB of storage to their console will need to cough up $399.99. For comparison, the Xbox Series S console only costs $299.99.
The 512GB card launches in mid-November, with the 2TB card scheduled for an early December release. You can pre-order the 512GB card right now from Walmart, and the 2TB card pre-orders will appear in November.
Next-gen consoles requires extremely fast storage, but $400 is a price few will be willing to pay to upgrade. Microsoft also runs the risk of having a more expensive upgrade path when compared to the PS5. Gen4 PCIe M.2 SSDs are also expensive, but there’s already 2TB options available for $300-$350 and prices will continue to fall.
