Just like Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter remains a popular series of fighting games for many (admittedly, probably older) gamers. So news of a new entry in the series is sure to spark a lot of interest.
As Eurogamer reports, Sega announced a new Virtua Fighter project at the end of the company’s Tokyo Game Show livestream. Very little is known about the project, but the game’s name clearly shows where Sega’s focus is—the new game is called Virtua Fighter x esports.
That’s not to say this will be a Virtua Fighter title purely for esports professionals, but it’s unclear if Sega is developing a brand new entry in the series or simply updating an old one so as to be used on modern hardware and in competitive environments. The only hint of what’s to come is in the tweeted teaser video you see above.
Virtua Fighter has been around for 27 years now, first appearing in arcades back in 1993 using the Sega Model 1 arcade platform and developed by Sega’s AM2 division. Since then we’ve seen it released on multiple home systems as well as receiving many new entries across generations of console hardware. The last title to be released was called Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown, which appeared first in arcades in 2010 before being ported to the PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. The easiest way to play that game today is by loading up either Yakuza 6, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, or Judgment and heading to the local in-game arcade to find the cabinet.
Taking into account the timing of this teaser video and announcement, we can only hope Sega is eyeing the PS5 and Xbox Series X when it’s ready to launch this game.
