Sigma is adding another mirrorless lens to its growing catalog. Its 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary has plenty of appeal for mirrorless photographers thanks to a design that’s notably lighter than typical 24-70mm F2.8 lenses, full-frame compatibility, and an $899 asking price.
It’s being offered for L-mount cameras from Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma itself, and in an E-mount version for Sony cameras. Weather protection is included—the lens is protected from dust and splashes, and its glass includes anti-smudge fluorine protection.
It’s a good match for today’s mirrorless full-frame cameras, especially smaller models like the Sigma fp and Sony a7C. It’s about half the weight of the 2-pound Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN Art, and only drops a little bit of wide angle coverage to get there.
We won’t know if its optics are quite the equal of the 24-70mm Art, but Sigma promises that the 28-70mm captures photos with strong resolution to the edges of the frame, along with optics that effectively suppress chromatic aberration.
It uses a stepping motor for autofocus, a type that’s proven to be quiet and deliver smooth results for video work when used in other lenses. It also promises very good macro capability, focusing as close as 2.8 inches for close-up shots.
We’ll have more when we’ve had a chance to test the 28-70mm. Sigma expects shipping to start in mid-March.
