A recent Windows 10 bug found users unable to reset their PCs. Some individuals with “certain hardware configurations” have been unable to restore their computer to a previous state, but now there’s a fix.
The “Reset this PC” feature is typically found under the Recovery section in the Settings menu. When issues arise with the PC configuration, Windows 10 users can utilize this option to return their computer to factory settings. A recent bug ended up disabling this feature for anyone still running Windows 10 version 2004.
When making an attempt at resetting, an error message would appear instead: “There was a problem when resetting your PC. No changes were made”. Microsoft has come forward with a simple workaround to resolve the issue until a complete fix has been deployed. The workaround, which utilizes the Deployment Image Servicing Management (DISM), is meant as a patch for the problem until a real solution is proposed.
The workaround, as Microsoft suggests, is as such:
“1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, type Command Prompt or cmd in the Search box, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
2. Type the following command, and then press Enter:
dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
3. Reboot your system, and attempt Reset this PC again.”
The problem should be taken care of after that, but it’s good to know Microsoft is working on a more permanent fix that should be coming through soon. Before tinkering with your PC in any factor, however, you may want to ensure you’ve backed up any important files you don’t want to lose.
Microsoft will likely announce some sort of more permanent fix in the coming days.
