South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are buying Casa Bonita. The much-loved Mexican-themed entertainment restaurant in Lakewood, Colorado, has featured in South Park and was facing bankruptcy.
As reported by CBS Denver, Parker and Stone revealed that they had reached a financial agreement with the owners of Casa Bonita in a live-streamed Facebook interview with Colorado governor Jared Polis. Stone explained that the deal was still pending legal proceedings, but the pair seem confident it will go through.
“We know that there have been a lot of people in Colorado that love Casa Bonita and have been working on this and we’re excited to work with everybody and make it the place we all want to make it,” Parker said. Casa Bonita was a chain of restaurants that dated back to 1968, but the Lakewood branch is now the only one remaining. It has been closed since March 2020 and had filed for bankruptcy protection. The restaurant is notable for such spectacles as a pool with diving gorillas, a puppet theater, a haunted tunnel, an arcade, and a magic theater. Colorado-born Stone and Parker told Polis that they used to go there as kids, and it featured in the Season 7 episode of South Park titled “Casa Bonita.”
However, there’s one thing the restaurant isn’t as renowned for, and that’s the quality of the food. Or as Polis said, “survive the food, stay for the experience.” Luckily, Parker and Stone told Polis that they plan to improve the venue’s culinary offerings. “I think everyone knows the potential of what that place can be and we certainly do, and I think it’s going to be an awesome Colorado thing,” said Parker.
This news follows the announcement that Parker and Stone have signed a $900 million deal with CBSViacom to create 14 South Park movies as well as 7 more seasons of the show. The series has been running since 1997.
