Mobile game downloads in Southeast Asia grew by 3.4% to reach 4.2 billion in the first half of 2024. Indonesia is at the forefront of this growth with 41% of the total downloads.
This is according to a new Southeast Asian mobile game market 2024 report from Sensor Tower, which shows that mobile game downloads in Indonesia also saw a 15% growth.
However, mobile game in-app purchase (IAP) revenue in the region declined by 3.0% to $1.16 billion, with 57% of the revenue generated from Google Play returning to levels seen in early 2020.
Revenue leaders
Simulation games became Southeast Asia’s most downloaded mobile game genre this year, with titles like Pizza Ready! and Ojol The Game contributing to an 11% period-over-period increase in simulation game downloads, reaching 1.2 billion by August.
Strategy and RPG games remained the top revenue-generating genres, accounting for 24% and 23% of total revenue, respectively. Sports games also saw significant growth, driven by eFootball™ 2024 and EA SPORTS FC™ Mobile Soccer, leading to a 39% increase in sports game revenue.
Regarding mobile game revenue, Thailand is currently the largest Southeast Asian market after experiencing a 10% mobile revenue increase period-over-period of more than $400 million.
Most downloaded titles
From January to August 2024, Garena Free Fire saw a 110% download surge in Indonesia and 54% growth across Southeast Asia, maintaining its top position in downloads both regionally and globally.
Mobile Legends: Bang Bang also recorded a 45% increase in downloads, with Indonesia contributing 44% of its total global downloads.
Supercell’s Pizza Ready! saw a sixfold increase in downloads, ranking 8th in total downloads. Tencent’s Honor of Kings, launched in June, quickly secured 3rd place in download growth.
Mobile Legends remained the top revenue generator in Southeast Asia, while eFootball™ 2024 saw nearly 90% revenue growth, ranking second.
Legend of Mushroom, launched in March, generated over $11 million in Southeast Asia, ranking 3rd in revenue growth, with Thailand and Vietnam contributing over 25% each.
