Spotify already announced video podcasts back in July, but now the company is moving to transform podcasts into other forms of entertainment, with Chernin Entertainment’s help.
Spotify announced a first-look partnership with Chernin Entertainment to help turn Spotify original podcasts into movies and TV shows. Chernin has produced popular movies such as The Greatest Showman and TV shows including New Girl.
According to Spotify, Chernin will have access to more than 250 Spotify originals. The two companies are already in collaboration with Pineapple Street Media on an adaptation of podcast series The Clearing. The top 10 podcasts on Spotify currently include My Favorite Murder, Crime Junkie, and The Michelle Obama Podcast.
A Spotify spokesperson told Digital Trends that other shows and their creators will have their own announcements in the weeks and months to come. They’ll join the ranks of podcasts such as Dirty John, which became a Bravo show.
Spotify’s “treasure trove of content plus the acceleration of new voices and stories provides an enormous opportunity to transform these addictive stories and IP into content for the screen,” Chernin Entertainment Chairman and CEO Peter Chernin said in a statement.
