What’s New from Spotify, unveiled today, is intended to make it easier to keep track of the latest songs, podcast episodes, and show updates as soon as they’re added to the service.
It’s become increasingly easy for new content to get lost in the shuffle (often literally) on Spotify’s platform. The company says “there are 50,000+ hours of content uploaded to Spotify every day,” as of February, and the platform has expanded from its focus on music to other audio content.
What’s New automatically collects the latest content in a reverse chronological feed based on all of the artists and podcasts a Spotify user follows on the platform. That feed is accessed via a bell icon in Spotify’s mobile apps that uses a blue dot indicator to announce new content.
Spotify says What’s New will include filters “that allow you to sort for new music releases or new podcast and show episodes, helping you find what you’re looking for more quickly,” which could prove useful if a user is looking specifically for music instead of podcasts. (Or vice versa.)
Engadget notes that What’s New serves a similar function to the Release Radar playlist Spotify introduced in 2016. The difference is that What’s New is supposed to collect all of the latest releases as they debut, whereas Release Radar is supposed to highlight the best new music.
Spotify users shouldn’t have to wait long for this new feature to help them keep track of their favorite creators’ activity. “What’s New is rolling out to all users globally on iOS and Android over the coming weeks,” the company says. “Soon, you’ll never miss a new release again.”
