Square Enix is shutting down its mobile game Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius nearly nine years after the title first launched in Japan in 2015.
The company released a statement to players stating it would discontinue the turn-based RPG as of October 30th, 2024.
No specific reason for shutting down the game was given. Square Enix said it had “come to the conclusion that it would be difficult to continue maintaining the app experience, and to therefore end the app service”.
Sales of Lapis and bundles have ended as of the announcement, though in-game events are scheduled to continue until the game’s closure.
Final months
Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius was launched in Japan in October 2015, before its global release worldwide in June 2016. The title became Square Enix’s most successful in-house mobile game based on the Final Fantasy IP – with MZ’s Final Fantasy XV: A New Empire generating more than $1 billion in revenue.
According to AppMagic estimates, Brave Exvius had generated $896.3 million ($627.4m) worldwide from lifetime player spending and 19m downloads across the App Store and Google Play.
Revenue has been on the decline for a number of years, however. In 2023, the title generated $21.9m in revenue, while during the first eight months of 2024, it accumulated $9.9m.
The decision to shut down Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius follows the closures of Dissidia Final Fantasy: Opera Omnia earlier this year and Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier in January 2023.
