The heir to the empire has been cast for the Star Wars series Ahsoka, and it’s a familiar voice. Lars Mikkelsen will play Grand Admiral Thrawn on the Disney+ show after previously portraying the villain on Star Wars Rebels.
The official Star Wars account on Twitter revealed Mikkelsen’s involvement on Ahsoka. He will be a major antagonist to the eponymous character, played by Rosario Dawson. They will be joined on the Disney+ series by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla and Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabrine Wren.
On top of voicing Thrawn, Mikkelsen is known for his work on The Witcher as the wizard Stregobor. He’s also appeared on House of Cards as well as BBC’s Sherlock. And if his last name sounds familiar, it’s because his brother is Mads.
Star Wars Ahsoka will debut this August, with the first trailer only giving us a glimpse at the back of Thrawn’s head. But we do know Ahsoka is disturbed by his reemergence.
Dawson hinted at Star Wars Celebration that a second season for Ahsoka is already being eyed, though ultimately that will depend on the success of this first season. She has previously appeared as the former Jedi Knight in The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett.
Author Timothy Zahn originally created the character of Thrawn for the book, Heir to the Empire. The 1991 novel began what became the Thrawn trilogy, with Dark Force Rising and The Last Command following in ’92 and ’93.
