If you need more Lego Mario in your life, six new Mario-themed sets are headed your way.
Lego’s Mario sets bring the classic video game to life. You move a battery-powered Lego Mario figurine through a Lego obstacle course built with the help of a companion smartphone app. The Bluetooth-enabled Lego Mario features a sensor on his feet, which scans special stickers on the Lego bricks to earn coins, which are displayed via a tiny front-panel LED screen.
The first kit, the Lego Super Mario Starter Course, debuted a few months ago, but another set, plus three expansion kits, two power-up kits, and a new character pack launch Jan. 1.
The $59.99 Master Your Adventure Maker is a 366-piece creative toolbox that allows the builder to customize how Mario and other characters earn coins. Players can change how Lego Mario reacts to three different bricks, while a new Start Pipe piece lets you shuffle the order of play.
This updated pack adds a purple brick to the mix, which represents poison, alongside the usual green (land), blue (water), and red (fire). Other sets arriving on Jan. 1 include the Chain Chomp Jungle Encounter Expansion Set (160 pieces, $19.99), the Piranha Plant Puzzling Challenge Expansion Set (267 pieces, $29.99), and the Wiggler’s Poison Swamp Expansion Set (374 pieces, $39.99). The Penguin Mario Power-Up Pack (18 pieces, $9.99) and the Tanooki Mario Power-Up Pack (13 pieces, $9.99) let Mario swap his usual duds for Tanooki and Penguin suits.
Lego also updated the Super Mario character packs to include 10 new buildable characters. You don’t know what you’re getting until you open the box, but options include a Huckit Crab, Spiny Cheep Cheep, Ninji, Foo, Parachute Goomba, Fly Guy, Poison Mushroom, Para-Beetle, Thwimp or a Bone Goomba. They’ll cost $5 each.
“It wouldn’t be Super Mario if we weren’t constantly creating new worlds and adventures for everyone’s favourite plumber,” said Simon Kent, design director and creative lead for the project.
