Supercell has increased its stake in London-based Beatstar developer Space Ape Games to 100% as it firmly establishes itself in the UK game development scene.
The Clash of Clans developer said the move would see Supercell effectively establish a new office in central London. It already has other studios in Helsinki, Shanghai, San Francisco and Seoul.
Supercell said the full acquisition would give it access to London-based talent, with the city already home to over 600 games companies.
Close partnership
“We believe the best teams create the best games, so we are really excited to find our place within London’s incredibly talented games ecosystem by joining forces with Space Ape,” said Supercell CEO Ilkka Paananen
“This move will bring in amazing new colleagues and make our games teams even stronger. With the best talent globally, we move faster on our mission of creating great games that as many people as possible play for years and that are remembered forever.”
Space Ape CEO John Earner added: “We’ve loved working closely with Supercell for many years, and this move is the next stage in that partnership. I am so proud of Space Ape’s contribution to the gaming industry over the last twelve years. I am looking forward to this next step in our evolution as part of the Supercell team.”
Supercell previously acquired a majority stake in Space Ape in 2017 and has worked closely with the company ever since, including collaborating on Hay Day. Meanwhile, Space Ape has previously used Supercell IP to soft launch the now cancelled Boom Beach Frontlines.
Space Ape’s games have been played by 180 million people around the world, generating more than $500 million. Its portfolio of titles includes Beatstar, Country Star and Chrome Valley Customs.
Space Ape recently ranked 20th on PocketGamer.biz Top 50 Mobile Game Makers 2024.
