The US website Sellcell.com has gained interesting insights from a survey about the iPhone 12: it’s found that Android users like the sound of the new phone, particularly the iPhone 12 mini model, and can see in it many incentives to switch from Android to iOS.
Needless to say, this is a bombshell. Let’s unpack what we’ve learned.
A third of respondents considering switch
In the survey, more than 2,000 Android users were asked: “Would you consider buying the upcoming iPhone 12 when you upgrade?” A third of these – 33% – answered “yes”.
For those willing to switch, this year’s smallest iPhone, expected to be called the iPhone 12 mini, is particularly interesting. Just under half of the respondents voted for the smallest model as the one they would be most likely to opt for:
- iPhone 12 mini (5.4in): 48.1%
- iPhone 12 (6.1in): 10.9%
- iPhone 12 Pro (6.1in) : 18.1%
- iPhone 12 Pro Max (6.7in): 22.9%
Slightly oddly, this suggests that the cheapest and the most expensive iPhone are the two most popular variants for potential switchers.
Also note that the wording of the survey was potentially confusing: following the naming conventions expected by pundits before the ‘mini’ theory came along, the surveyors refer to the smallest model as simply ‘iPhone 12’ and the non-Pro 6.1in model as ‘iPhone 12 Max’. However, respondents were given screen sizes and expected pricing for each variant, so hopefully were not misled.
Privacy and software support
When it comes to the reasons for considering a switch, Apple’s focus on privacy and longevity of support is clearly bearing fruit. The results of the survey show that these two aspects are the best incentives for Android users to switch: 55.9% give longer software support as a reason, while 48.8% applaud the better handling of private data.
Only around a quarter perceive better features as a reason to switch, and “Better user interface” lands in last place with just 12.1% – surprisingly, since many iPhone owners find the iOS interface to be particularly pleasant.
The new iPhone 12 is expected to be announced on 13 October. Catch up on the latest gossip in our iPhone 12 news hub; here’s how to watch the event live.
iPad and Apple Watch
The survey didn’t just cover the new iPhone; Android users were also asked about Apple’s iPads and its Apple Watches. The iPad also proved very popular, with 36% of respondents saying they consider the iPad in their purchase decision when buying a new tablet. Two thirds of them favour the new iPad Air, one third the eighth-gen iPad.
The Apple Watch, however, does not do so well in the survey; only 17.1% of those surveyed would consider Apple’s model when buying a new smartwatch. Of these few, an overwhelming majority of 73.5% favour the Apple Watch SE over the more expensive Series 6.
