The incredibly popular action-adventure sandbox game Terraria has seen a release on just about every platform available since it launched in 2011. Google Stadia was going to be added to that list, but not anymore thanks to the action (and subsequent inaction) of Google.
As IGN reports, Terraria is developed by Re-Logic, which was founded by Andrew Spinks. On Jan. 27, Spinks tweeted that he’d been suspended from YouTube and Gmail without explanation. Today, Spinks tweeted again, explaining how he’s been locked out of his Google account for over three weeks, and by locked out he means from everything: Google Play, Google Drive, YouTube, and his Gmail account after 15 years of using it for email.
The obvious frustration felt by Spinks has only been made worse by Google not explaining why he was locked out, and today that frustration boiled over into anger. In another tweet (see above), Spinks announced that the planned port of Terraria to Google’s Stadia streaming service has been canceled, following up with a further tweet stating, “I will not be involved with a corporation that values their customers and partners so little. Doing business with you is a liability.” Spinks also suggests support for Android could come to an end because of this action.
With Terraria already being available on PC, Android, iOS, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, the loss here seems greater to Google than it does to Re-Logic. Google needs popular games to help grow Stadia’s userbase, and it looks to have just lost one guaranteed hit due to a lack of communication with the developer. However, it may already be too late for Stadia to succeed after Google decided to cease internal development of exclusive games for its own platform last week.
