Texas Instruments (TI) has selected Sherman, Texas as the location for a massive expansion of its US chip manufacturing facilities, which will bring new jobs and billions of investment to the area over the next few years.
TI is planning to construct up to four 300mm semiconductor wafer fabrication plants in Sherman, with construction on the first two fabs beginning next year. The first fab is set to come online at some point in 2025. If all four fabs are completed, TI expects to have invested around $30 billion in the site and created 3,000 new jobs.
The American tech company already has a 300mm fab called DMOS6 operating in Dallas, and RFAB1 operating in Richardson. A second fab at the Richardson site (RFAB2) is expected to start production in the second half of 2022. TI acquired a fab in Lehi, Utah (LFAB) from Micron earlier this year, which is expected to start producing chips in early 2023. With the Sherman project, TI is effectively doubling its 300mm fab footprint in the US.
According to The Dallas Morning NewsThe Dallas Morning News, the Grayson County site is 4.7 million square feet in size and TI is set to receive sizeable tax breaks from local governments. Those breaks include property tax abatement, property tax caps, and rebates over the next 30 years. It’s hoped that the new plants will not only add billions to the local tax base eventually, but also attract other companies to the area to support TI’s expanded operations.
