It has been several months since Apple announced its MagSafe charging solution for the iPhone 12 lineup, and now we’re slowly seeing third party solutions make their way to store shelves. Although there are plenty of low-end options on Amazon and other online retailers, finding a good MagSafe charger is hit or miss, and there are a few things you’ll want to keep in mind.
What Is MagSafe Charging?
MagSafe is Apple’s wireless charging standard for its new iPhone 12 models. MagSafe relies on a strong magnet array to ensure perfect placement of the charging pad against the phone, for more consistent charging. With MagSafe, you’ll get a maximum charging speed of 15W for all iPhone 12 models except the iPhone 12 mini, which maxes out at 12W. MagSafe charging isn’t as quick as a fast-charging adapter with a USB-C–to-Lightning cable, but it’s twice as fast as dropping your phone on a standard Qi wireless charger.
It’s worth noting there’s a big difference between MagSafe chargers and MagSafe-compatible chargers. A MagSafe charger will support a maximum output of 15W and have a built-in magnetometer and compass to prevent interference if you use your iPhone while it’s charging. Chargers that are only MagSafe-compatible max out at 7.5W Qi wireless charging speeds.
Do I Need a Separate Power Adapter?
Like the iPhone 12, some MagSafe and MagSafe-compatible chargers don’t have power adapters in the box, on the assumption that you’ve probably got plenty of USB power adapters lying around. Other chargers come with everything you need. Check the specs of your chosen MagSafe charging stand to see whether you’ll have to supply a power adapter. If you do, make sure it’s a fast-charging adapter that exceeds 18W, especially if you’ll be charging an Apple Watch or AirPods on a 2-in-1 stand.
These are our favorite MagSafe charging solutions for your iPhone 12. A few of them support non-iPhones, but if you have an Android phone, your best reference is our list of Android-compatible wireless chargers. And while you’re thinking about keeping your phone powered up, you might want to pick up a portable charger or power bank just in case.
