Disney is bent on bringing every one of its classic animated films to life in a hybrid live-action and CG version. One of the biggest films yet to get that treatment is The Little Mermaid. The entertainment giant unveiled the first teaser for the movie at its D23 event today.
The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, who sings a line from the iconic “Part of Your World” in the short, minute-long teaser. Those in attendance at D23 got to see the entire song, but we’ll have to do with this little clip, for now.
The film also stars Javier Bardem as King Triton, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric. Daveed Diggs will play Sebastian the crab, while Jacob Tremblay will voice Flounder (which will appear as an actual flounder fish). Rob Marshall is directing.
Disney has set a release date of May 26, 2023, for the adaptation to hit theaters. This is just one of a bunch of announcements coming out of D23. Disney also offered up a look at the upcoming Disney+ film Hocus Pocus 2, and revealed that Jamie Lee Curtis will join Jared Leto as a member of the cast of the upcoming Haunted Mansion film, with even more announcements to follow. Alongside movies, Disney and Marvel Studios are showing off some games in the works, including news that Uncharted 2 director Amy Hennig is working on a game that stars Captain America and Black Panther.
