Sadly, we won’t be getting a new Halo game when the Xbox Series X launches next month. But as a consolation, Microsoft will offer a classic Halo games on the console rendered in a glorious 120 frames per second.
The company plans on releasing an upgraded version of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which has been “fully optimized” for the Xbox Series X and Series S, on Nov. 17.
Both the campaign mode and multiplayer will be playable at 120fps, or double what you can currently achieve on the PC and Xbox One versions of the game. On the Xbox Series X, the split-screen mode for local multiplayer is also getting improved for up to 4K resolution.
The best part is the upgraded Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be free to existing owners of the game and to players who subscribe to Xbox Game Pass.
The news may help make up for Microsoft’s decision to postpone the release of Halo Infinite, which was supposed to be a major Xbox Series X launch title. Instead, the highly anticipated game is slated to arrive next year in order to give developers more time to improve the game.
For other games, Microsoft last week announced 30 other new and recent titles have been optimized for the Xbox Series X and Series S, including Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, NBA 2K21, Borderlands 3, Gears 5, and Fortnite.
The Xbox Series X and Series S arrive on Nov. 10.
