Smart deadbolts are supremely convenient, but they can also be expensive and difficult to install. Retrofit smart locks like the new Abode Lock, from smart home system developer Abode Systems, address both of those drawbacks by replacing the dumb components of your existing lock and leaving most of the existing hardware in place.
This news story is part of TechHive’s in-depth coverage of the best smart locks.
The Abode Lock is being offered at a launch-discount price of $129.99 for a limited time; the regular price is $159.99. The lock comes bundled with a numeric keypad that also has an embedded fingerprint reader. The new lock fits over the interior components of your existing lock, which neatly avoids the hassle associated with replacing the bolt and other components that can be difficult to align. And since the exterior side of your lock doesn’t change, you can continue using your existing key.

You’ll pair the lock with the Abode app using Bluetooth, and then control will be transferred to your Wi-Fi network. To ensure long battery life, Abode says the lock uses a 4,000mAh rechargeable Li-ion battery that should last 12 months between charges. The keypad pairs with the lock via Bluetooth to reduce power consumption for both components.
The lock supports up to 10 unique users, each with one PIN and five fingerprint registrations. You can create one-time-use PINs that expire once they’re used, as well as scheduled PINs that are valid only during specified dates and times. The latter are convenient for cleaners, dogwalkers, and other recurring service providers. The former make it easy to grant access to plumbers, electricians, and other professionals who’ve arrived for a one-time appointment. You can also remotely operate the lock from anywhere you have broadband access.
Abode says its new lock can operate on a standalone basis and is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, It can also be integrated into one of Abode’s home security systems, including automation routines with geofence features, when the user subscribes to one of the company’s subscription plans. Those start at $7 per month.
